Details of the latest vacancies can be found here

You can also follow the Tor project on Mastodon as well as other social media and communication platforms. Details are on their contact page.

Hope this helps

International coalition calls for action against surveillance-based advertising

Interesting article, this fightback has now started, there is hopefully no going back and we will see an end to all this tracking, advertising and other unwanted nonsense.

**Groups in Europe and U.S. ask for action to end practices that threaten citizens’ rights. **

` Every day, consumers are exposed to extensive commercial surveillance online. This leads to manipulation, fraud, discrimination and privacy violations. Information about what we like, our purchases, mental and physical health, sexual orientation, location and political views are collected, combined and used under the guise of targeting advertising. You can read the full article at [1]. I have also included a link to a Discourse thread as well as a link to the Data Detox kit.

Watomatic

After 15th May you can either accept the new terms set down by WhatsApp or you will need to leave the service, there are alternatives such XMPP, however you may want something to auto respond to message to let your folowers know you have swtiched.

Watomatic sends an automated reply to everyone contacting you on WhatsApp. This is especially useful if you are planning to migrate away from WhatsApp but can also be used as a vacation responder.

Bio metric mass surveillance

More mass surveillance appears to be on the cards, so we need to sign a petition against this, however if you are in the UK, which has left the EU, then the UK isn't listed so I have added a link so you can find you local MP and write to them about this.

We need to make sure a similar law does not end up on our statute books.

We aren‘t walking barcodes! Sign the brand new European Citizens‘ Initiative for banning biometric mass surveillance now!

Safer Internet Day 2021

A few resources that have been shared on the Fediverse recently

The Digital Detox website [1] gives some useful information on how to protect your digital security, privacy and well being online.

Email self defense [2] covers encryption and how you can use techniques to both sign and encrypt email.

The Free Software Foundation : India [4] have produced a nice guide on different messaging apps. I made a post on this a while back.

Of course a good way to stay safe and private is to also use the privacy respecting search engines such as duckduckgo [5] and perhaps install browser extensions such as libreJS [6]

Supporting and following what people such the Electronic Frontier Foundation [7] as the Small Technology Foundation [8] and the Solid Project [9] also a good idea, see what is happening and how these project can give the end user, true control of their data.

Choose better software and hardware, that supports user freedom. Devices such as the PineBook / Phone [10] could really put power back in your hands.
