Anyone now claiming that no one uses the Fediverse, clearly has no clue as to what they are talking about.

There is a large academic presence on Mastodon alone, and Mastodon is just part of the wider Fediverse. The first list below [1] is an excellent resource, there is also Trunk, which also lists by interest / topic.

Mastodon Announcement Jan 2025

There has been a major announcement by the main developer of Mastodon. In essence, the founder, Eugen Rochko has made the decision that he should not be making all the decisions and has transferred key assets to a non-profit entity. You can read more below.

This is an excellent move, as Eugen does not want to be the next Elon Musk or Mark Zuckerberg.

• The people should own the town square.
• ArsTechnica have also produced a write-up of what has happened.

I have put some links below so if you want to join. Don't forget you can download all your data easily and import this in to a different instance, should you decide to move elsewhere later.

Updating Mastodon Presentation

Intro

I last updated my Mastodon Presentation in 2020, I have been working on a new version using Overleaf and the LaTeX typesetting system.

I have tried to make sure it is clear what both the Fediverse is, what Mastodon is and how Mastodon fits within the Fediverse.

The old version, written in LibreOffice Inpress is here.

The new version is here

New version uses

• Overleaf Online editor
• LaTex + Beamer
• External assets e.g graphics
• main.tex

You can clone this in the usual way

I am still not very good at using git, and there is little in the way of support within Torbay at the moment.
