Scratch Spiral Project

So in this activity, we are going to try and produce a spiral using Scratch code. This is similar to what Spirograph [TM] produces.

It should look something like this when complete.

spiral1

Open up Scratch 3 in a browser and create a new project.

  1. Start off with the when Green Flag is clicked block

Green Flag

  1. Set the Sprite to the centre of the stage

Set To Centre

  1. Add a block to erase anything drawn on the stage from previous projects, then put Pen Down.

Erase and Pen Down

  1. Now add the Main Loop blocks as follows

Main Loop

  1. Your final code should look like this

Final Code

When run, you should see it draw circles on the screen, move and re-draw, eventually building up a layer on layer spiral pattern with circles.

The method here for drawing circles could be used in other projects too.

Free Code Camp Update 02/10/2020

I have now completed all the modules in the FreeCodeCamp responsive web design course.

Profile can be found here that details the time line for this. I have also updated my LinkedIn profile with this update.

As yet I have ONLY completed the actual modules and have not undertaken the assessment projects. However my intention was to follow the course to help support Paignton Library Code Club anyway.

Virtual Code Club August 2020

The Paignton Library virtual code club is still running, please feel free to share what you are working on in Scratch with our Scratch studio

cc-by logo

This is a newly created studio for these completed projects.

To keep people safe this studio is also invite only you will therefore need to contact the library, provide your scratch user name and I can invite you in.

Please contact [Paignton Library and information centre](https://www.torbaylibraries.org.uk/web/arena/paigntonlibrary

Related profiles :-

Both Repl.it and FreeCodeCamp have excellent features, to share code, ask for help and help others.

I have been looking in to the Repl.it teams feature at the moment, early days as I think I will wait till the forum feature is up as this seems integral to the teams feature.

Stay safe on the forums.

For advice on e-safety please see ThinkUKnow

Paignton library summer virtual Code Club-5: JavaScript

Further to previous post.

So last week we looked at Python and how we can make games. This week, lets move on to JavaScript.

By now you will probably have an account with both Repl.it and FreeCodeCamp, so jump straight in and start reading, watching and of course coding.

Both websites have excellent forums, you should be able to ask for help with custom projects on Repl.it.

You have a lot of choice here, you can learn to develop games, learn data analyses, machine learning or how to use JavaScript with webpages and much more.

If you would like any help please get in touch with me on twitter @zleap2018 or via the library @paigntonlibrary

Paignton library summer virtual Code Club-4

Further to previous post

Carrying on with a Python theme. If you have been following this Virtual Code Club since March, then you will have completed the modules, so I don't think it is fair to keep repeating this.

It look like Repl.it now supports Turtle graphics, which is great for the Code Club modules.

Repl.it supports the following:-

Pgzero – This is a simpler framework for teaching using creation of games.

So feel free to check out these and the websites and see if you can get coding games in Python, as Repl.it is collaborative then it makes it easier to work as part of small teams on this.

I am on Repl.it as @zleap

Paignton Library Summer Virtual Code Club 3

So further to the previous post

Lets move on to Python.

Paignton Library will be sending these activities out via Social media using the hashtag #PLAIC_codeclub

If you don't already have an account for either home or school then you can sign up to a free Trinket account at:-

While all activities are here

I appreciate that if you have been following the virtual code club since march. If you have, and you would like to move on then FreeCodeCamp have lots of tutorials:-

You may also want to look at signing up to Repl.it in order to gain collaborative browser based developer environment.

A new feature of Repl.it is Teams. I am currently investigating this.

Paignton Library Summer Virtual Code Club 2

To continue with the Paignton Library Virtual Code Club.

Paignton Library will be sending these activities out via Social media using the hashtag #PLAIC_codeclub

If you don't already have an account for either home or school then you can sign up to a free scratch account via * Scratch

While all the Scratch Module 1 activities are here

The modules can either be followed as they are, or as with the physical code club, are useful as a guide. If you get stuck or need inspiration how to do things.

We still have the Library Studio up here.

If you share with the Scratch studio, remember to do so safely and not share too much personal information. By sharing you can help others, learn from others and improve your own learning as you go.

I created some of my own instructions, for Scratch 3.0 a while back which are presented below.

updated the above list to point to GitLab rather than GitHub as I am moving away from GitHub as much as possible
