Open Learn – Discovering Chemistry

Anyone looking at undertaking this course with Open Learn, I have set up a thread on discourse to facilitate further discussion.

Chemistry lies at the centre of our modern life, playing a part in areas as diverse as the development of new drugs and materials, analysing our environment through to more mundane activities such as washing your clothes and making your tea. But to truly understand the role chemistry plays you need to have a sound grasp of a number of fundamental principles.

This free course, Discovering chemistry, introduces you to some of these concepts, beginning with the idea that everything that you can see is made of building blocks called atoms. This leads on to a look at the chemical elements and how they are arranged in the Periodic Table, enabling chemists to rationalise patterns in their chemical and physical behaviour.

Next you will consider chemical reactions, specifically how atoms combine with other atoms to form molecules, and how molecules combine with other atoms or molecules to form bigger molecules. You will meet simple (tried and tested) theories to explain the bonding in molecules and at how their shapes may be explained, and indeed predicted. And in a wider sense you’ll be looking at why reactions happen at all and how fast they go.

This is also a beginner’s level course in the language of the chemist; you’ll learn about symbols, formulas and how chemical equations which represent reactions are constructed. Finally you will see how chemists count atoms and molecules, essential for making up solutions of a known concentration in order to carry out a reaction, or performing a chemical analysis.

Quantum science & technology: Highlights of 2021

Just found this, so making a final post for today. These are some of the highlights in the world of Physics in 2021. Lots of things happened in 2021, so lets hope 2022 is equally as exciting.

I have added a link to the discourse forum and also a link to the Tuxiversity science thread, so you can discuss courses and other options for learning.

Learning disability awareness

I have now completed 'Learning disability awareness' with e-learning at work. Another really good course.

This course will start by giving you an overview of some of the common types and causes of learning disabilities and how they affect people.

It will touch on how a person centred approach to care will get the best results and look at how management must perform, and at the needs of the individual.

It will also discuss overcoming the stigma attached to learning disabilities and much more.

The course covers the following modules:

  • Introduction
  • Learning Disabilities: the Basics
  • New Understanding
  • Person-centred Approach
  • Meeting Needs – Part 1
  • Meeting Needs – Part 2
  • Meeting Needs – Part 3
  • Legal Framework, Opportunities and
  • Safeguarding

OpenLearn : Discovering Chemistry

Just signed upto Discovering Chemistry with Open Learn [1]. This is a 24 hour course from the Open University [2] via their OpenLearn platform.

This is partly for personal interest, partly for career development and will help me develop useful knowledge going forward. I have set up a thread on Discourse [3] to facilitate discussion.

I would like to learn more about Isotope shift , which is mentioned in a arXiv article [4] from 2017. This topic is probably beyond the scope of the chemistry course, but is a good starting point. Hopefully however this Chemistry course can build on what I already know about isotopes at least.

Adapt Learning Suite

As part of the Debian Academy [1], we are currently using Moodle [2] and also Adapt [3] to help create courses. So far I have just had a look at this, but I have found a training guide [4] and was sent a YouTube [5] by David B. So should, with help be able to come up with some ideas for courses.

The idea of Debian Academy, is to help more people in to contributing to Debian, by introducing how to get involved, from packaging, testing. bug reporting and mentoring and much more.

If you are interested in joining please e-mail the team from the Wiki page [1] or join us on IRC – #debian-academy on oftc [6]

Numbers, units and arithmetic

Donate using Liberapay

I have just completed the course 'Numbers, units and arithmetic' with Open Learn. This is an excellent 5 hour course and will be really useful going forward.

Well worth doing if you need a refresher as there are lots of worked examples and activities to have a go at to re-enforce learning.

You can of course, as with any OpenLearn course use this as a reference in the future if you need to revise or revisit how to do something. Full PDF of the course is also .
