Torbay Covid 19 update 5th March 2021
An update from Torbay’s director of public health, Dr Lincoln Sargeant
Lincoln Sargeant
Our cases are falling steadily in the Bay which is great news and we need to keep them coming down, but the virus is still spreading between families living in different households.
Schools and colleges start to open with regular testing for staff and pupils
Wrap around provision able to operate for all children as normal. Parents and carers will need to check with individual schools and providers for specific offers
Care home visits allowed with one nominated and tested visitor
Outdoor recreation as well as exercise is allowed as a household and with one person outside the household/bubble.
Please remember that despite the easing of some restrictions;
* We are still in lockdown
* We need everyone to keep to their own households/bubble when indoors
* Keep making space
* Keep your contacts to a minimum
In his video this week, our director of public health, Dr Lincoln Sargeant reflects on the year since our first case of COVID-19 in the Bay, the difficulty for all those grieving the 148 lives lost to COVID-19 in Torbay, and he looks to the future as we ease out of lockdown. Watch the video.
Thank you,
Dr Lincoln Sargeant
Keeping people safe and well
Vaccine latest
Anyone who has received a letter from the National Booking System inviting them to book an appointment should use the website or 119 to book an appointment. The NHS is urging people who have received a letter not to contact their GP practice about a vaccination.
The programme of second doses in care homes is being rolled out during March.

Framework Laptop.
Another great find on Mastodon / Fediverse. A laptop that is sustainable and upgradable.
Looks like another good project and great that we are seeing more products like this.

Climate change threatens European forests
Interesting article posted to the Fediverse by the Science Daily bot.
So trees are essential for several things including
CO2 reduction, so we are chopping down trees and also pumping more CO2 in to the atmosphere, which is causing climate change, which in turn is also causing trees to die.
One way to sow the seeds of our own destruction. Once Humans are gone, I think the Earth will recover, probably quite quickly.
We have seen evidence of how wildlife takes back control, during the first lock down in March –> May 2020, with no cars or people around, villages had animals take over. See BBC news link below.
Well worth reading the article, for a picture of what is happening.

The Hubble Space Telescope: From Cosmological Conflict to Alien Atmospheres
Write up : 7th March 2021
This is a really interesting talk and overview of what the HST has undertaken since launch in 1990.
Some highlights
Gravitational lensing, found galaxies magnified 50x and detection of galaxies 10x fainter.
Precision cosmology & Hubble Constant calculations via several methods
Exoplanet Atmospheres
Exoplanets e.g 57 Pegasi
Exoplanets found from transiting host star
Planetary Atmospheres plus detection of organic molecules
Earth size Exoplanets (Trappist 1b and 1c)
The talk also makes reference to academic papers, which can be easily searched for, so for example
With the last point in the list above, this paper was
De Wit, et al 2016 Nature 537,69 – if you search for this you find
arxiv 1006.01103 which is publication in the above journal 2016Natur 537
The 537 refers to the volume, and 69 is the first page of the article, in this case the article is on pages 69 to 72.
So using the references from the talk you can do further reading.
Well worth watching

Introduction to Infection Prevention and Control (IPC)
Just completed the above course with OpenWHO. Very interesting and also interesting to learn how complex infection control can be at a practical level.
This is a free course, Very useful for anyone who is looking at moving in to Healthcare or related professions.

Creative Education : De-escalation
I have just completed with Creative Education.
This is yet another really good course, covered lots of ground in an hour, how to recognise signs, cause of distress, and de-escalation techniques using verbal and non verbal methods, Looked at the ABC (Antecendents, Behaviour, Consequences) method to help us be more effective.
Can be used with young people, by facility staff or equally by parents.
Great course, and looking forward to another free course next week perhaps.
