Typesetting Math multiplication

There are several different ways to express multiplication in Mathematics. As \LaTeX is (or can be) used to typeset mathematical and scientific expressions. The following may be useful.

In general we use the $\ce{\times}$ symbol to express multiplication, for example 12 $\ce{\times}$ 6

This can be type set using

 12 $\ce{\times}$ 6

However it may also be expressed with * in which case we just use

12 * 6

In algebra, this can be expressed as:

AB

Where A is 12 and B is 6

However you may come across the use of a dot

12 $\ce{\cdot}$ 6

In which case we use

12 $\ce{\cdot}$ 6

This could be useful for typesetting the notation we used in the November stem group meeting for determining the speed of light

New SI prefixes go large and small

Just sharing this from Physics world magazine as It seems relevant to anyone interested in large and small numerical values.

So basically we are looking at :

  • $10^{27}$ – Nonna
  • $10^{30}$ – quecca Along with their counterparts
  • $10^{-27}$ – ronto
  • $10^{-30}$ – quecto

Numbers, units and arithmetic

I have just completed the course 'Numbers, units and arithmetic' with Open Learn. This is an excellent 5 hour course and will be really useful going forward.

Well worth doing if you need a refresher as there are lots of worked examples and activities to have a go at to re-enforce learning.

You can of course, as with any OpenLearn course use this as a reference in the future if you need to revise or revisit how to do something. Full PDF of the course is also .

I am working on a series of $\LaTeX$ flashcards to help people learn the basics.

I am not creating a fully comprehensive set of these. LaTeX has far too many features for this.

What I want to do, is create a set, that just covers the basics:

  • Setting up a preamble
  • Document types
  • Sections
  • Table Of Contents (TOC)
  • Cross referencing
  • Bibliographies
  • Citations
  • Plus a few examples of Maths and Science typesetting.

Hopefully enough for people to get started or for myself to support the teaching of the system.

I feel confident enough to actually try and tech LaTeX, so another reason for these cards would be to help me with this, should I get the opportunity to do so. It is a good idea to prepare for this sort of eventuality.

As LaTeX is aimed at academia, once you have the basics, you can keep going and learn more depending on your usage case. There is a lot of help available too.

Despite it being aimed at academic applications, it can produce very professional looking letters, CVs / Resumes and a whole range of other documents too.
