Scismic Careers Fair

I attended the Scismic virtual careers fair yesterday (21st July). Excellent event and really useful. I am not looking for biotech jobs, but I did find the CV work shop useful, esp scanning through CVs to pick out key words / skills etc.

Looking forward to future events, workshops, webinars etc.

Creative Education : Parental Awareness of Self-Harm 1/6/2021

Self-harm is really not discussed enough within our society and it effects more young people than we might think. It can be anything from nail biting to hair pulling right through to some more serious actions. Within this session, we will take a look at some of the triggers, some of the signs to look for and have an open conversation about ways to support young people to break the cycle of self-harm.

Creative Education : How to Engage & motivate your class 23/5/2021

Just completed another excellent short course with Creative Education. Got a few ideas from this to take in to Coder Dojos or Code Clubs at least. Should also be very useful in classrooms when working with small groups.

Course presented by Austen Hardwick.

Some good vocabulary for my CV too.

This course is based upon 4 ‘P’ principles which enable children (and teachers) to find fulfilment in their working day. Born out of personal experience, it builds a framework for classroom learning in which children and teachers are able to explore their potential in a mutually supportive and positive environment. Developed within primary schools (although with the potential for secondary application), these principles can change the atmosphere of learning for everyone.

This weeks short course is Spot and Support Speech, Language & Communication Needs.

This is a course for anyone new to Speech, Language and Communication Needs and wanting to find out more about them. It aims to give you the basics so that you can start to identify pupils who may be displaying tendencies and work with those pupils to support their needs. We’ll therefore give you advice and simple ideas you can put into practice straight away and approaches to adapt and trial. It may be that the pupil needs further support so we’ll talk about what other avenues you may want to pursue. Great for teachers new to the profession, support staff or anyone wanting to check their understanding and support pupils to have the best possible outcomes.

FOSS And Crafts Podcast

If you enjoy the LibreLounge podcast [2], Christopher Lemmer Webber [6] appears to have left this, and started up a new podcast called FOSS AND Crafts [3]. This is a “A podcast about free software, free culture, and making things together”

This is something that is worth checking out, as with LibreLounge you can subscribe to the podcast and also download on .ogg [5] and .mp3 file formats.

I wrote a post in December on how to subscribe to LibreLounge using vlc [7] so the procedure is the same.

FSF fights to secure software freedom for future generations

A message from Geoffrey Knauth, President, Free Software Foundation.

This year-end, we are focusing on growing the community with our year-end goal of gaining 500 new associate members before December 31st. The deadline is only two days away, and we are not there yet. We need your support to continue to grow, and to give strength to the Free Software Foundation's (FSF) mission to protect #UserFreedom. Below is a message from our president Geoffrey Knauth reflecting on the FSF's mission to protect software users everywhere.

The US government recognized that 2020 was a difficult year for people, and for charities like the FSF. Special tax law changes for 2020 now make it possible for deduction of cash donations, including becoming an associate member, of up to $300 made before December 31, 2020.
