Big Tech : Your time is Up
This weekend sees new EU laws designed to reign in big tech. Not before time, and something really DOES need to happen.
This Fediverse post is about the new laws which will be in FORCE from THIS WEEKEND.
A link to the article can also be found here. While not applicable in the UK, big tech companies are going to find their irresponsible, arrogant free for all behaviour is coming to an end.
In further news, families of victims are staring to fight back too. Brianna Ghey's mother and Molly Russell's father join forces to combat online harm
I look forward to massive fines for these companies, lawsuits, and hopefully PRISON terms for those at the top who have FAILED or FAIL TO protect users properly.
We may not be able to put Zukerberg or X CEO Linda Yaccarino in the dock, but we can perhaps put those who are at the top in their European HQs in the dock. I am sure these people will be very pleased about that.

Bogus science
Bad science is now becoming a real concern for the science community, This Fediverse post gives an idea of the issues involved.
To make things worse, we now have AI producing total nonsensical science.
Very worrying as science needs to be trusted, and the peer review process needs to be robust to maintain that trust.

Stsci lectures Feb 2024 update
I have been catching up on these lectures as they are fascinating. The LISA talk was also good as it gave a lot of background information as to the science behind this. Exciting times to come, even though it may be a decade before the mission is launched in to space.

EdX LaTeX course update
I have nearly finished the course, however I seem to have gone past the deadline so my audit period has expired. I just need to complete the section on referencing, indexing and cross-referencing.
To be fair, I can do the above anyway, I do get a little mixed up on cross-referencing, so this section would have been useful for that.
I will get in touch to see if this can be extended for a week or so, so that I can complete.l

STEM Group 10th February 2024 Write up
So today there were a total of 4 people who attended, Helen demonstrated various robots made from Lego. We also carried on making the poor man version with scraps of card, scraps of wire, motors and milk bottle tops. This method is NOT working, but it is ALL we have access to.

This robot is mega advanced, has the ability to range find so it knows where it is in relation to obstacles, has a build in IP camera, and can move, by next meeting more features will be added. It also uses an IR remote control.
Something to aim for when you start building projects.

This robot car just moves very fast across the room.
We also tried to do more chemistry but ended up just adding vinegar to bicarbonate of Soda.
I will try and get the Lego We do sorted out for next time, as I need time to pick up the Tablets, then will need help to get them to connect to the Lego via Bluetooth, which I struggle with.
Next Stem group meeting is on Saturday 24th Feb at Paignton Library, room 12, between 10:30 and 15:00.

We will probably carry on with the robot car we have been working on and see what people bring with them to showcase.

LISA – the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna
This is another upcoming project, which will see a huge space based laser antenna created to help in the search for gravitational waves.
You can read more about this here it may be possible to invite someone to the STEM group to talk more about the science behind this.
I think the LIGO project is similar to this. There is certainly a lot of interest in Gravitational waves at the moment.
