Paignton Library STEM Group – December 2021

The December STEM group meeting will take place on 11/12/2021. As with the first event, this will be a mix of coding, discussions and look at projects brought along to the event.

Paignton STEM Group Poster

However we are hoping to :

  • Help a student with testing a web based application (part of university project)
  • Get an update on the project brought to us in November
  • Start building a Micro:bit robot

Some of the Links below are related to the Paignton Code Club and the CV / Overleaf links are related to some of the discussions had, at code club on Saturday 4th December.

Definitions

Having recently completed several courses, I am just making a quick summary of some key definitions from these courses.

Harassment [2]

Any unwanted, physical, verbal or non verbal conduct that has the purpose or effect of violating a persons dignity or creating an intimidating, hostile, degrading, humiliating or offensive environment for them.

Bullying [2]

Offensive, intimidating, malicious or insulting behaviour involving misuse of power that can make a person feel vulnerable, upset, humiliated, undermined or threatened.

Sexual Harassment [3]

Unwanted conduct of a sexual nature in a workplace, or other professional or social setting.

Protected groups under the 2010 Equality Act [4]

1 Sex 2 Race / ethnicity 3 Skin Colour 4 Language 5 Religion 6 Political or other opinion 7 National or social origin 8 Association with national minority 9 Property 10 Birth 11 Other status 12 Sexual orientation 13 Marriage / Civil Partnership 14 Gender reassignment

App;lies

  • At work
  • Education
  • Consumer
  • Public services
  • Buying / renting property
  • Member/ guest of a private club or association

Doing these courses is empowering, even more so when people at work FAIL to protect you and your right to go to work and be safe and free from harassment from others in any shape way or form.

Which role models are best for STEM?

Just found this posted to Mastodon by Science Daily bot. May make interesting reading.

Collaborative editing

One of the really great things about the Fediverse is that others are willing to chip in and help. I was working on another article for the Beach Hut [1]. As this was about Mastodon and the Fediverse. I asked for help.

Pasting a draft in to a Disroot [2] pad and then pasting a link in to mastodon so that others could collaborate editing, within an hour the article was pretty much completed with others users connecting and editing.

Collaborative Ediitng

This was real time collaboration using free software and also open source software tools. The article will now be submitted for hopeful publication in the January 2022 issue.

You can find out more about Mastodon at [3].

Big Blue Button 2.4 testing

I am in the process of helping to test Big Blue Button 2.4

bbb

This is going well and the improvements from 2.3 are welcome.

The faircam server will soon be running 2.4 once it is out of beta / testing and the test server will move to run the 2.5 beta / testing software.

It is quite nice when you find a problem and are able to report it, gives you a good feeling you have made a contribution to a wider project that is used all over the world.

I have actually made a suggestion on the developer forum for a feature that would be useful. So as with finding problems, making feature requests is also really good.

In most cases one of the the BEST thing you can do, is to let the developers know that the software works. I think this often gets overlooked, developers are human after all.

Astronomy Dec 2021

There are some really good resources out there for Amateur and professional astronomy enthusiasts. Two such websites are listed below.

I have also linked in the tags below so those links should bring up previous posts on this topic.

Skymaps provides a downloadable map, along with monthly events list and also a list of what can be seen, along with the distance to these objects.

Code Club 4/12/2021 update

The next Club will be on Saturday 4th December 2021 @ Paignton Library. Please contact the library to book.

We will carry on with what we were doing last session, hopefully expand on what we were doing with the Micro:bit

In order to try and support this further, I have created a little connector board to help connect components to the Micro:bit computer.

Connector Board 1

Board and servo. The issue with the servo normally is that connecting to a Micro:bit with croc clips you need a solid connection. If you remove the connector you are simply left with very thin, multi core wire.

Connector Board 2

This board just bridges the gap, plug the board connector in to the top.

Connector Board 3

Then connect the crocodile clip(s) to the other set of connectors

Connector Board 4

A close up of the connection.

Please note: There is nothing special about doing this, I just soldered this up in the hope it may make things easier at code club. The servo could be swapped out for other sensors, for example a moisture sensor.

Update 2/12/2021

I have also created an LED board to go with the overall set of boards being created.

Connector Board 4
