Code Club 18/1/2020 Write up

Today at Code Club we had 8 attendees, which is a really good So we had more scratch, and did some more work on the website project.

There was some interest in Micro:bits but not that much. This is something for future sessions. Or even a dedicated session at the library for this. Which may work better.

I also trying and get a Lego Mindstorms Robot built, but this takes time.

We also had Lucy, from the Tech Jam drop in and this resulted in a few e-mail between myself and Lucy go discuss learning platforms.

Next Code Club is on Saturday 1st February 2020.

As I am a STEM Ambassador. I attended some training today (17/1/2020) to help support the First Lego League Jr Expo event. This will running in June 2020.

We started out with a presentation on STEM Ambassadors, then we moved on to looking at the Lego WeDo kits, what we could do with them and how to use the various sensors that come with the kit. For example sound sensor, movement and distance sensor. The IDE for this is really easy to use. Scratch also has built in support (via a module) that supports WeDo.

In the afternoon we looked at what the Lego League Expo was and how schools can prepare for this event in June.

Each school received 2x Lego WeDO kits and 2x lego enginnering kits for the Expo.

Applications for mentoring organizations for this years Google summer of code are now open.

A timeline for the programme is available with student applications starting in March. This should give time for people to research any projects they want to help, learn additional software for example before starting.

Please use the contact details here to find out more information.

I have been making some regular posts to Friendi.ca on the current NFL Football season. As we are now in post season, it seems this has been neglected a little.

WEEK 17

Week 17 Saw the current Superbowl champions fall to a shock 24-27 loss against the Miami Dolphins, which forced them in to a Wild card play off against the Tennessee Titans in Week 18 wild card game.

This game was lost 20-13.

  • Week 19

Week 19 saw the Divisional playoff games with the 49ers, Titans, Chefs and Packers all securing their places in the Conference Championship games.

The games look like:

  • Titans vs Chiefs
  • Packers vs 49ers

Which will be played on Sunday 19th January 2020 for a place in the Superbowl on 2nd Feb.

In the meantime the Pro Bowl will be played on Sunday January 26th.

At the time of writing, CAS are still looking for someone to take over from Claire as South West coordinator.

In the meantime, as I have previously offered to support CAS on a local level. I am still willing to do this.

What I aim to do, is at least try and promote CAS on a local level, see if I can get more teachers / staff / educators in the CAS South Devon forum and take it from there.

I have lots of resources that I would like to share. But I also need feed back to help me improve these resources.

Code Club 18/01/2020

The next Code Club will be on Saturday 18th January at Paignton Library and information Centre

Carrying on from what we were doing on 4/1/2020. If anyone is interested in the Hour Of Code activity, we can have a go at that too.

More Scratch 3.0 coding, which is great and a good starting point before moving on to other programming languages.

Rocksndiamonds. which I hope we can eventually use to learn level layout.

South Devon Tech Jam – January 2020 Write Up

South Devon Tech Jam – January 2020 Write Up

Today we had a busy jam, with a good few activities going on. I arrived about 9:30 am to start setting up.

cc-by logo

Main work area, with Pi's, Minecraft server etc

cc-by logo

Lots of stickers and other free stuff.

cc-by logo

We now have a RetroPie set up, with games. Here I have a Pacman game ready to go.

cc-by logo

Paul B spent most of the jam helping Lucy with refurbishing a BBC Micro computer. This seemed to go really well.

We also had a visit from Adam Shoreland from the Wikimedia foundation. Adam spent time explaining what he is doing Adam also explained to two of our younger attendees about Wikidata and how to edit this via the Wikidata website. Adam also explained how to use Wikidata:SPARQL query service

Related to this

We also had a visit from Gordon Henderson come along and demonstrate a mechanical calculator, as well as a few other people who were working on their own projects etc.

We also noted down some of the network port numbers so that I can ask if more ports can be either enabled or confirmed if they are connected. This will make it easier to connect to the wider internet if required.

In all a good event and looking forward to next month. The next jam will be on Saturday 8th February 2020

I am working on a series of $\LaTeX$ flashcards to help people learn the basics.

I am not creating a fully comprehensive set of these. LaTeX has far too many features for this.

What I want to do, is create a set, that just covers the basics:

  • Setting up a preamble
  • Document types
  • Sections
  • Table Of Contents (TOC)
  • Cross referencing
  • Bibliographies
  • Citations
  • Plus a few examples of Maths and Science typesetting.

Hopefully enough for people to get started or for myself to support the teaching of the system.

I feel confident enough to actually try and tech LaTeX, so another reason for these cards would be to help me with this, should I get the opportunity to do so. It is a good idea to prepare for this sort of eventuality.

As LaTeX is aimed at academia, once you have the basics, you can keep going and learn more depending on your usage case. There is a lot of help available too.

Despite it being aimed at academic applications, it can produce very professional looking letters, CVs / Resumes and a whole range of other documents too.

Following a conversation on the Mosaic browser. I decided to try and view my personal Journal blog in the Lynx console browser. Screenshot below.

cc-by logo

The blog works really nicely on Lynx. I can navigate, select links and the various static pages. Lynx does not display pictures or other media, but this is fine. It should display the alt text data though.

This at least allows my website to be viewed in other browsers at least, not that I can see people moving en-masse to text based browsers.

Lynx can be installed with apt install lynx as root user of course.
