Open University Space Science Newsletter

Donate using Liberapay

As I have studied with the Open University [1]. I am now part of the Alumni Association. At the end of 2020 I joined the new OU Students Space Science Club. Soon after this there was a call for ideas for a Newsletter.

I decided to offer to help put something together, so have been undertaking this.

Issue one, has been completed and sent out. I am now working on issue 2.

I am writing this in $\LaTeX$ [2] using Overleaf[3], which is much easier for creating documents, then word processing systems.

The newsletter is a mix of news about space and space science, links to related websites.

wicd-curses

wicd-curses is a console program that allows you to connect to wireless wifi networks. I found out about this after chatting on IRC with a few other users on freenode and mentioned I was having issues connecting to wifi from the command line.

This can be installed using apt install wicd-curses. A man page can be viewed with man wicd-curses.

Wicd-curses

As I am using Debian then the package information can be found here.

The above screenshot is from my desktop which does not have or even need wifi connection. But on my netbook this should show available wifi networks, and allow the one you want to be selected. You will probably need your wifi credentials e.g password etc to connect further.

Another step to seeing if I can actually use a computer directly from the command line without the need for a gui. I need to try and configure alpine to now send e-mail and I may be nearly there. However this isn’t really essential to my needs anyway.

Please feel free to discuss further on Mastodon

EP 4

So this week, Aral and Laura looked at how they live stream their episodes.

Laura talked about accessibility, using subtitles, transcripts and the various tools available to help with that.

Aral then talked about the different hardware / software used for live streaming, mixing video, etc. If you are interested in live streaming video then it is really worth watching for that,

This is an interesting little utility to draw an ASCII map on the terminal. It uses OpenStreetMap for the mapping data.

Open a terminal and enter

telnet mapscii.me

You should then be presented with a world map:

Malware discovered on Computers given to children

Donate using Liberapay

The BBC has reported Malware found on laptops given out by government this report asks several important question as to why these laptops have not been wiped before giving away.

"Ideally users should reboot into safe mode and run a full scan with an anti-virus product," he said.

"However with this type of malware, it is advisable to seek professional assistance in order to ensure it has been correctly removed."

Is even more hilarious, to get a professional in to fix this issue will COST MONEY which is the one thing these families don't have.

Once again a scheme by our government has gone wrong.

First thing people should do when getting any device such as this is to wipe it and install a OS such as Debian, Mint or Ubuntu.
