A Possible Planet in the Habitable zone of Alpha Centauri?

I found this, so am sharing here. Even though it will take a long time to get there, it is nice that there is possibly a planet that is habitable. Feel free to discuss on discourse.

I guess we could stop off there for resources etc.

Navigating Frenemies, Cliques and Bants with Your Teen

During this practical short course, Pooky will walk you through a range of simple ideas to help you to support your teen with their friendships. None of these ideas require any existing knowledge or experience and they are all designed to feel easily doable. You don’t have to do them all; pick one or two and see how you get on. This course is written with parents and carers of children from about the age of 11 primarily in mind, but the ideas here could easily be adapted for use by people working with young people or you could use them to deliver workshops or discussion sessions to parents or carers. This is one of a series of webinars commissioned by Resilient Rutland who are funded by the National Lottery

Muon g-2 experiment finds strong evidence for new physics

Just sharing this video posted by Fermilab to dioide.zone on Peertube. This is a really nice, beginner friendly explanation.

The first results from the Muon g-2 experiment hosted at Fermilab show fundamental particles called muons behaving in a way not predicted by the Standard Model of particle physics. Announced on April 7, 2021, these results confirm and strengthen the findings of an earlier experiment of the same name performed at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Combined, the two results show strong evidence that our best theoretical model of the subatomic world is incomplete. One potential explanation would be the existence of undiscovered particles or forces. This video explains what a muon is, how the Muon g-2 experiment works, and the significance of this result.

Spacefarers: How Humans Will Settle the Moon, Mars, and Beyond : Writeup

6th April

Speaker: Christopher Wanjek Description: More than 50 years after the Apollo 11 moon landing, why is there so little human presence in space? Will we ever reach Mars? What will it take to become a multi-planet species, colonizing the Solar System and travelling to other stars?

With details here

Write up.

This was another really interesting, thought provoking lecture presented by Christopher Wanjek

The lecture started at about 15:30 in to the video after Frank has given his introduction, details of upcoming lectures and also an update on space news.

So some of the items covered were the cost and difficulty of getting off Earth in to space, then on to the Moon, very expensive. However once there, we are not out of the woods, the lunar surface is bombarded with radiation, the moon dust itself is toxic, growing food would need to be undertaken under artificial light, due to the radiation.

As the temperature on the moon can fluctuate between -200 and +200 F then one course of action for establishing some sort of presence on the moon would be the poles, where the temperature is a “cold, but workable” -50c.

We can harvest ice to produce Water, which can also be converted in to Hydrogen and Oxygen,

Christopher also then looked at how we can develop science on the Moon, Geology, Biology.

A look at gravity and how much humans rely on Gravity and how this can perhaps be created artificially.

The European Space Agency are looking at sending pods to the moon, build something before we go, I think it was also suggested we need to cover any buildings with moon dust, in order to provide full shielding from radiation. This apparently needs to be about 1 meter thick layer. Bare in mind that the dust is like Asbestos. Getting around and some transportation systems were suggested.

We may need to live in caves as these would be a constant temperature and a shield against radiation.

Space tourism could potentially be a huge industry As We are unable to have children on the Moon (something to do with gravity) then building cities may not be practical.

So on to Mars

Firstly getting there is dangerous, we are potentially exposed to radiation over a long period of time, once there the surface is still bombarded with radiation and there are dust storms to contend with, However it was suggested we could live in caves

One way of protecting us from radiation is to use Boron Nitriade, as boron can absorb secondary particles .

Mars surface has toxic components, so we may have to grow food under LED lights.

So lots to think about, lots of challenges a head so a great time to discuss more, study science and help work on the solutions needed.

A lot more was discussed including design of space suits,

Thank you for reading, worth checking out the video and the book Spacefarers by Christopher.

You can find more upcoming (monthly) lectures below.

Social media faces new regulator

BBC Tech news [1] has an article [2] on the new Digital Markets Unit [3] what what the implications will be for the big social media companies ( Google, Facebook and Amazon ). Tough regulation is long over due. So this announcement is most welcome.

Lets hope, the new regulator has the guts to stand up to big tech and remind them if they want to operate in the Uk they need to follow the rules.

Of course, people could simply switch to services such as Mastodon [4] which already have proper privacy, no tracking or advertising nonsense and you can follow who YOU want. If you self host, through services such as Masto Host [6] then you truly do have control.

Alternatives to google search would include searx [6] while disroot [7] have a really good range of services. PixelFed [8] is for picture sharing and PeerTube [9] can be used for video sharing. OpenStreetMap [10] for mapping. And much more is available. If you are using e-mail I would suggest also setting up OpenPGP to help with digital signing of e-mails and if needed encryption.

Everyone's Invited

I am promoting this cause because it is IMPORTANT TO DO SO.

What concerns me, is the fact that victims appear have BEEN IGNORED by people who claim they are PROFESSIONAL.

We are a movement committed to eradicating rape culture.
Trigger warning for the survivor testimonies: sexual violence and abuse

Read the testimonies and make your own mind up as to how schools have handled these claims.

Schools have a Statutory duty of care to promote and safeguard the welfare of children and young people

This statement is on every school website. This statement form part of pretty much every job avert. So why the hell are victims being ignored, fobbed off and treated as if it is their fault?

Some of the testimonies have struck a chord with me. At least in terms of being ignored, fobbed off and lack of EFFECTIVE action taken against those who abuse others. So to me this sort of thing HAPPENS. Not just me it has happened to others.

How is this being allowed to happen.??

Sufficient to say, the abuse that is being disclosed and the apparent reactions of school staff is nothing short of repugnant, and what has happned to the victims is equally repugnant. Maybe that should be construed as TEACHERS CONDONING RAPE CULTURE.

If you are a victim please please speak up at school, Teachers / staff have a

LEGAL A DUTY OF CARE TO HELP YOU

Failure to investigate properly or making excuses constitutes gross misconduct, those teachers should be SACKED.

Front line staff need to take a disclosure and pass it on to the designated safeguarding lead. There is a standard procedure to follow, if front line staff are doing this THEY SHOULD BE PRAISED. If the people such as the DSL have failed they should be SACKED and BANNED from schools. To be on the safe side perhaps BANNED from working with vulnerable adults too.

The following links may help you make complaints, if a school has failed they should be REPORTED TO OFSTED and teachers to the GENERAL TEACHING COUNCIL.

Time to end this culture of abuse in school has long passed, time for action is NOW and long overdue.

I hope that the statement from Gavin Williams is not simply a sound byte and schools will be subjected to serious sanctions / pubishments over this.

New Supercollider

Just had this from Symmetry Magazine [1], an article, discussing the plans for the new super collider [2]. Which will open up a whole new set of discoveries (well hopefully anyway). This could make a good discussion on Discourse [3] so I have added a new topic to discuss further [4]. If you are interested in studying physics then maybe try the Open University [5] or to learn more about the Large Hadron Collider see the CERN page on this [6].
