Elementary OS 6
Elementary OS 6 [1] has been released. Looks like this has some nice new features.
I decided to write this post after following a link on their Mastodon [2] post to the Elementary OS store were you can buy Laptops with Elementary OS pre-installed. There are a few suppliers listed. I am picking out star labs here [4] as the are United Kingdom based. They appear to sell quite a few Linux friendly laptops and offer a range of OS choices. What is also great is they seem reasonably priced. I am not too sure how much these are fully freeOS friendly (e.g Debian) however it is nice to just be able to buy hardware without Windows for a start.

Sexual Harassment in the work place
Just completed another course with e-learning at work. This a really useful course, a lot to take in, but an essential topic. I would encourage EVERYONE to undertake this training, then hold your employer to account. In the light of everyone's invited I would encourage Parent / Guardians to do the same, so that schools can be held to account too.
The third case study is very disturbing for another reason. Nothing was mentioned about those staff members (inc the headteacher) being struck off from teaching given what happened. You need to do the course to find out more.
This course will start by defining sexual harassment and explaining how protection comes from both employment law and criminal law. You'll see from workplace statistics how widespread and serious the problem is, and how the management response to concerns raised is often poor or non-existent. It also addresses how allegations should be handled, explains the importance of having clear and robust policies and the role line managers tend to take when it comes to dealing with these situations. The course also covers investigation from the employer's perspective, the role of employment tribunals, and concludes with some case studies that will give further insight into what constitutes harassment and the outcome of cases where the businesses did not act appropriately to deal with this behaviour.

I attended this on the 17 August, as with previous events, this wss really interesting. Looking at some useful hints on how to strike a good balance and ensuing people look after themselves and others at work. A useful discussion on strategies people can use. I posted a link to the perfectionism video which may be helpful.
Worker mental health is essential and key to being more productive. So another thank you to the Scismic team

Torbay Covid update 17/8/2021
From Monday 16th August self-isolation rules for contacts are changing
share icon
What is changing?
It is no longer a legal requirement for people who are fully vaccinated to self-isolate if they have been in contact with someone testing positive for COVID-19.
Contacts are strongly advised to take a PCR test and to limit social contact.
Anyone with symptoms is still advised to self-isolate and get a PCR test as soon as possible.
Fully vaccinated means:
People who have been vaccinated with an approved vaccine in the UK
There were 14 days between the final dose of the vaccine and last contact with the case.
Other groups who are exempt from isolation if they are a contact:
Children and young adults under 18 years and 6 months
People who cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons
In summary:
Contacts who are fully vaccinated or otherwise exempt will be advised to take a PCR test and limit social contact but will not be required to self-isolate whilst waiting for results of their PCR test.
Under 5s will only be required to take a PCR test if they were in contact with a case in their own household.
Those who are not fully vaccinated and are not exempt will still be required to take a PCR test and isolate for 10 days from their most recent contact with a positive case.
If you are in isolation on the 16 August and fully vaccinated, you can stop isolation from 16 August.

History of Afghanistan
As of 17th August 2021, the Taliban swift take over of Afghanistan [1] is in the news. I decided to look up the history of Afghanistan, which is really interesting.
Granted Wikipedia is NOT considered an academic source of information, nevertheless this article makes interesting reading and if you are writing an essay or paper then there are citations and references to the authors sources of information. Which would make further reading too.
Interesting quote in the article
“Afghanistan is “easy to march into, hard to march out of.” was made by Alexander the Great in 330 BCE, assuming I have read understood the article correctly, the situation is not much different now.
I will have another look later as the article is right up August 1t5th at the time of writing this.
I think by understanding the history of the country more, then it does make understanding the current situation better . Given that it has been invaded so many times, and each time the culture has been influenced, both in what seems positive and negative ways.
