Code Club 4/10/2021

I am back at Code Club today, 2nd session since our return. If you are still not sure what Code Club is, then you have clearly being living in a cave since about 2012. Anyway, it is a coding club for children, generally 9-13 years of age.

The Paignton Club is a little more advanced, in that some of the attendees are working through a responsive web design course.

It would be really good to get MORE code clubs in Torbay, and in fact would be really nice if those clubs could collaborate, share expertise, maybe some resources.

Disciplinary Procedures

I have now undertaken the disciplinary procedures course with elearning at work.

This course covers the aims of the disciplinary procedure, penalties including investigations, allegations and suspensions, procedures for carrying out hearings, and appeals.

The course covers the following modules:

    Disciplinary Procedure and Confidentiality
    Investigations, Allegations and Suspensions
Notification Of A Hearing, The Right To Be Accompanied, And Procedure
    Penalties, Their Effects, And Appeals
Holding Disciplinary Hearings And A Case Study

Disciplinary Procedures

Rationale

You may be wondering, why I felt the need to do this course. The answer is simply, accountability. This is 2021

Everyone's invited [6] and a recent Royal College of Nursing Conference [5] both point to a serious issue with Sexual Harassment

In the case of [6] some young people were fobbed off, accused of lying or told it was their fault.

The other courses I have undertaken recently [3].[4] ad [5], all cite disciplinary procedures as a way to eventually and ultimately solve the issue, so knowing the processes complements these courses.

Safeguarding Children

I have now completed 'Safeguarding children' with e-learning at work. Another really good course, and essential for anyone working with children. I also e-mailed them to give them some feedback on the course content.

I have included links to some of the key statutory documents in this post.

During this course you will hear many facts, figures and details surrounding the risk to children, the types of abuse suffered, how to recognise the signs of abuse and key safeguarding legislations put in place to minimise the abuse of children. Once you are able to recognise the signs of possible abuse, and know the steps you should take if you suspect it you will be better able to protect the children in your care.

The course covers the following modules:

    Introduction to Safeguarding Children
Types of Abuse, who may carry it out and why children may not tell
How to Recognise the Signs of Abuse
What to do if you suspect a child is being
    Safeguarding Legislation

Introduction to Deep learning

I found this on the Fediverse, which is a really good place to find interesting content. I am not being fed what some crappy AI / algorithm thinks that I may be interested in. I just follow the right people and happen across something interesting and engaging.

There are some really interesting people on there too.

This is a video series on “Introduction to Deep Learning”

Duckduckgo and Google Ghrome

As I am running code club at Paignton Library, I need to use Google chrome, as this works really well with Scratch. It make it easier to manage some aspects of code club from home.

In order to mitigate what chrome does as a browser. Once I had installed, on the first run I Opted out of having chrome as my default browser and also opted out of the tracking it offers.

The first thing I did. was to switch my default search to duckduckgo.

First step click on the URL box and select Manage search engines

Manage

You will then see the list of search engines. I have already taken the step of adding duck duck go to Chrome.

SE list

You need to remove the unwanted search engines with the menu

Menu to remove search tools

Note: in order remove google as a search tool you need to make duckduckgo default then go ahead and remove google.
