NASA SpaceApps 2020

NASA SpaceApps event is from 2nd to 4th October 2020 and those wishing to participate will need to register with NASA at https://www.spaceappschallenge.org/ from mid August.

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic and in the interest of our global community’s health and safety, NASA and the Space Apps Global Organizing Team have made the difficult decision to make the 2020 hackathon an all-virtual event. Each local virtual event will be hosted by one of our Space Apps Local Leads -- event leaders who will help connect registrants from their local communities to each other and to NASA. All participants will be invited to attend a global opening ceremony on October 2, which will be streamed on YouTube.

The South Devon Tech Jam is looking at perhaps putting a team together for this and will announce details in due course.

New Repl.it course 3/8/2020

New course – How to teach yourself coding with Quizlet Founder Andrew Sutherland.

This may complement Paignton Code Club nicely. You can find more details here

I still need to complete the FreeCodeCamp course I am undertaking, I am also undertaking Teaching Primary Science : Chemistry With futurelearn.

Hopefully however, this is useful. I have shared on with Paignton Library on Twitter and with the Local Children and Young People partnership.

Super Container OS

Just found this on Mastodon. Super Container OS, a Debian-Based Live Distro with a Built-In #Container Engine.

Could be good for anyone who would like to get up and running quickly as it is also installable.

If you would like to discuss further please join Mastodon as I don't much about container technology.

In an update to my previous post the learn LaTeX resource has now developed really nicely in to an excellent resource.

You can have a go at the exercises using Overleaf or the built in editor.

This resource is now progressing really nicely. Joseph Write did a presentation on this at Tug2020

Resources

You can ask questions on LaTeX forums here

If you do need some help then I can mostly be found on Qoto STEM focused Mastodon instance within the fediverse. I do login to the LaTeX forums from time to time. I seem to be on ScienceForums quite a lot these days discussing either Chemistry, Astronomy or Astrophysics.

Note: I am just trying to promote the above websites, I am hoping that my basic chemistry tutorial can complement.

Paignton Library Summer Virtual Code Club

To continue with the Paignton Library Virtual Code Club. I am resending the Scratch modules out. As it is summer holidays it may be something to do when it is raining, colder or there is a local lock down and we are all stuck indoors again.

Paignton Library will be sending these activities out via Social media using the hashtag #PLAIC_codeclub

If you don't already have an account for either home or school then you can sign up to a free scratch account via * Scratch

While all the Scratch Module 1 activities are here

The modules can either be followed as they are, or as with the physical code club, are useful as a guide. If you get stuck or need inspiration how to do things.

We still have the Library Studio up here.

If you share with the Scratch studio, remember to do so safely and not share too much personal information. By sharing you can help others, learn from others and improve your own learning as you go.

I created some of my own instructions, for Scratch 3.0 a while back which are presented below.

Physics world article 30th July 2020

This posts relates to an article on Physics World on 30th July 2020 on a recent discovery.

Before we go further, the following two links may be useful for further reading:

I have started a thread on Science Forums regarding this which can be found here

So my question on there, relates more to Mars and what the effect of this radiation would have on Mars and if there was life, given, what seems to be lower protection from radiation. I asked if the effect on any life would have be more catastrophic.

This is assuming that any protective barrier is as it is now, the article at [2] may suggest it has changed over time.

The protection(s) offered on Earth and Mars is discussed below.

1 What Protects the Earth From Harmful Solar Flares?

Updated March 10, 2018 By Tammie Painter

I found an article in EOS.org on the Magnetic field around Mars

2 How Mars’s Magnetic Field Let Its Atmosphere Slip Away

By Mark Zastrow 31 March 2020, this article seems to draw on article in “Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics”

So as the main article is citing several elements:

It may also be a good idea to look at the decay of these elements.

Reference Samarium, this article by Tudor Vieru on Apr 4, 2012 may be interesting Half-Life of Samarium-146 Refined

Andy Brunning – Royal Society of Chemistry created some info graphics on the elements listed above. They can be found on the Compound Interest which is where I got them from.

Smarium

Uranium

Plutonium

A week of LaTeX related activities

Last weekend July 24-26, 2020, saw this years TUG conference go virtual. This was great for those of us who can't normally attend these sorts of events.

A good few interesting and useful talks. I didn't attend all of them, but the ones I did included:

  • Eric Mc Sween – Integrating a new TeXLive in to Overleaf
  • Jim Hefferon – A new set of LaTeX packages

As the videos are going to be put online, I will catch up lter. Joseph Wright's talk on LearnLaTeX is interesting too.

Following this, on Thrusday 30th July I attended the webinar on “How to Create Professional Looking Documents In-House”. This was interesting but a little bit beyond my use case.

However it did demonstrate what Overleaf is capable of, so something I would recommend to others.

The webinar also refereed to the Jupyter editor which again looks interesting. The Overleaf webinar, will be available online soon.

In all an interesting week, I need to catch up on the talks, I have downloaded the pdf on LaTeX packages, as I took notes so now have a nice list of useful packages that can serve quite a few use cases when creating documents.

New Citizen science project from Zooniverse

I was sent this on 21st July 2020

We're happy to announce the launch of a new project: * A Century of Natural History Observations

For an explanation of the project, let's hear from the project team:

“For over a century, the team at Mohonk Preserve has been diligently collecting data on all aspects of the natural life in the Shawangunk Mountains region. Everything from weather patterns to the phenology of local species is carefully monitored and catalogued each year, creating a treasure trove of data for anyone who wants to know more about the phenology of the “Gunks.” Today we use technology to store and track our data, but this was not always the case. Daniel Smiley, the creator of this project, originally would walk the Shawangunk Ridge lands with notecards in hand, writing down whatever he saw. Over the course of his lifetime, he and other researchers with whom he worked created over 10,000 notecards.

These notecards are rich with detailed information that is useful in a multitude of research projects in areas like ecology, land-use change, animal migration, and species’ range changes. Rather than keeping this important research tool tucked away in file cabinets, we want to make these cards digitally available to scientists, students and all who want to use them. Through a generous grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services through the Museums for America program, we’ve been able to establish a project protocol and create digital images of over 9,000 Dan’s note cards. Now we’re asking you for help making this information fully searchable by looking at individual cards and transcribing the information on them. Thank you for helping us share and expand access to this remarkable natural history resource!” Learn more and get involved at:

https://www.zooniverse.org/projects/mohonkpreservedsrc/a-century-of-natural-history-observations

Thanks for all your help!

Cliff & the Zooniverse Team
