We're Mission:Libre, a new project for teens that love free software!

We aim to get teens excited about software freedom and help them learn skills they'll need as they become tomorrow's free software contributors and activists.

We'll be spreading the word about free software to young people, building supportive communities where teens can explore technology with others, helping young people defend their right to use free software and encouraging them to take their interests further in higher education.

This is good news, the EU is continuing its quest to run own services, from cloud, to security. The USA is no longer considered, by many, a reliable or trustworthy partner.

With lots of discussions about big tech, privacy and data protection there has been discussions on the Social Web, about using protocols such as Gopher and related software.

We are also seeing attacks on science from the USA with departments cut, and information on a range of issues; such as DEI, Climate Science, Medical Science being removed, risking this being lost forever.

The Gopher protocol (/ˈɡoʊfər/ ⓘ) is a communication protocol designed for distributing, searching, and retrieving documents in Internet Protocol networks. [1]

There are still some servers out there, some are new, and offer services such as HackerNews, Project Gutenberg and others. Thanks to Anthk @anthk@paquita.masto.host who has made a list of some of these Gopher servers

Note the tutorial above on how to set up gopher on a Raspberry Pi, appears to be using system V, (init.d system I think) hence I have included the 3rd link which covers how to manage services on both. The 2nd link should help with setting up the actual gopher files.

I tried to install the software mentioned in the first link above and there seems to be a problem with this in my raspberry pi, so I removed this and have installed gophernicus instead.

A few years ago, I made a reference cheat sheet to summarise the commands and key bindings for the Joe text editor. I have now updated this, but just included the main commands found on the first page of the help section, along with one or two others found elsewhere in the help tool.

This is a new group, formed out of the Stem group at Paignton library, it is aimed at adult tinkerers, project builders etc and hopes to bring like-minded people together.

We enjoy experimentation, Tinkering etc.

We had a busy session today. As you can see from the photo, we did more work on the netbooks.

We were also doing more Scratch and some HTML / CSS.

I have added more links below to try and reflect our current set of activities.

I was also helping another attendee with electronics, even though I think what he wants to do is a little complex for the resources available and requires more engineering and or electronics knowledge.

As well as the above, Helen from the STEM group was working on getting the line following robot working and also getting the Lego WeDo working, so we now have a small Lego robot that can detect obstacles, as well as a basic Lego Windmill, which we can look at this during the next STEM group meeting on the 9th December.

FreeBSD 14.0 is due for release very soon, you can find out more from here. The home page will show 13 as legacy and 14 as production once release is completed.

I will update the ventoy usb stick with the latest version in due course.
