Effect of long term space flight on the Brain

Study explores effects of extended spaceflight on brain

Scientists from the U.S., Europe and Russia are part of a team releasing the results of a large collaborative study involving the effects of long duration spaceflight on the brain.

Positive note: Despite the current situation in Ukraine, those involved in science can still carry on working and collaborating, for the benefit of everyone.

Lots of work behind the scenes to iron out some bugs & problems with the software. I was involved with further testing on 15/3 and there is further testing planned for 17/3. This testing has also included load testing so we know the server will stand up to the number of users expected.

Looking good for the weekend. There will be a LibrePlanet post on Saturday with a link to this.

A New Map of All the Particles and Forces

A New Map of All the Particles and Forces

This is an interesting new way to look at the standard model of particle physics that re-arranges things to better illustrate how different particles relate to each other.

The current diagram to present the standard model is below, this just shows the normal matter. I have one that shows anti matter too. In some ways this follows a similar layout to the periodic table

As an intermediate, diagram I actually like this diagram

Both the above diagrams are sourced from [1].

The new model called the 'double simple model' does look far more complex. However it has far more detail and better illustrates the relationship and interactions between the different forces / particles. You can view this at [1], while the paper describing how the team came up with this is at [2].

I have printed this, so it is something to discuss at the next STEM group meeting on the 12th March.

Building a ping pong ball shooter – part 2

Building a ping pong ball shooter

Further to the previous post, the ball shooter is now built up. I do need to solder this together, at some point. For now, it works as it is. This is the test I did at the library (more space).

Building a ping pong ball shooter

Building a ping pong ball shooter

As part of an order from Better Equipped, I sent for a ping pong ball shooter. This consists of two rotating disks, which propel a ping pong ball forward.

So far, I have only partly built this. I need to do some soldering to complete. I also want to find a safe place to test it. This project will be demonstrated at the Paignton Library STEM group, but could be used in a school too. This would support, Science, Maths, Design & Technology and possibly other subjects.

Growing salt crystals – 2nd attempt

Following my previous attempt at this. I am now repeating the experiment with pure Sodium Chloride. I am also using a 250ml conical flask, which is much larger.

This time I used hot water from the kettle, taking a precaution of warming this up with warm tap water first, just in case the sudden temperature changed caused the flask to shatter. I then added Sodium Chloride powder.

I am now leaving this to hopefully grow some nice crystals which I would expect to be more of a cuboid shape. This prediction is based on:-

• Pictures of similar results
• The molecular shape of Sodium Chloride.

I am doing this for:

• Support the STEM Group events
• Hopefully can use this in a school to help children grow their own crystals.
• Personal interest
• Research purposes
