Jupiter Moons
While the hunt for exoplanets is developing at pace, closer to home we keep finding new moons, esp around Jupiter. This week we found 12 new moons.

Home Chemistry 10 – Alcohols Part 2
So further to the previous post. We tried this at the STEM group on 11/2/2023.
So using :
We had to weigh the sugar, a measuring cylinder was used to measure out the water. Yeast comes in 7g packets, so 3 are needed, in fact this dictated how much of the other ingredients were used. These ingredients are in a 1:1:1 ratio in a 250ml conical flash. We could see / hear the bubbles which showed the reaction was taking place.
After about 2 hours the result looked like this
The reaction can be written down as (source here )
Glucose/sugar + Water (in presence of enzyme yeast) = Ethanol + Carbon Dioxide
$\ce{C6H12O6 + Yeast + H2O –> 2C2H5OH + 2CO2}$

Exoplanets
Another interesting article posted to Fediverse. This is about new exoplanet discoveries. I think this suggests we have found a Jupiter like planet around another star. However this is even further away than the previous planet discovered by Kepler. Another discovery by the Kepler Telescope, which I would guess one day will be observed by the HST, JWST or both.
A really good time to study STEM and get involved in resarch and new discoveries.

Home Chemistry 10 – Alcohol(s)
So further to the previous experiment. I am going to have a go at fermentation. I have the equipment required including an airlock
The experiment detailed in my previous post should produce ethanoic acid, where as this experiment will produce the alcohol (ethanol) $\ce{C2H5OH}$ As I am using an airlock.
Again, will try this at the next stem group meeting on 11th Feb, with the view to also doing something similar at the STEM Group meeting on 11th March as this coincides with Science week. We have other things planned for that too.
The use of universal indicator paper should help determine what is produced.

Safer Internet Day
Today is Safer Internet Day also known as SID. This year marks 20 years since the campaign started.
There are lots of resources on the website, and schools should be running sessions so as your teachers for details.
There are lots of things we can do which still make using the internet enjoyable and educational, but a safer experience. Not sharing personal information, being mindful as to who we are communicating with, to perhaps changing our social media to platforms that are more privacy friendly, seeking accurate information, see Sense about science for details and have a look at their 'ask for evidence' information. This is also a good way to avoid misinformation by fact checking what we read or see online by developing the skills to do so.
This article may also be useful too When critical thinking isn’t enough: to beat information overload, we need to learn ‘critical ignoring’
Simple changes could also include switching from google to duckduckgo for search, installing privacy essentials will also block sites such as facebook from tracking you. I don't notice this as much as I have simply blocked facebook and meta.
I also block cookies as much as possible, these are not needed esp any integration with analytics.google.com serve no real purpose other than to spy on you.
