We're Mission:Libre, a new project for teens that love free software!

We aim to get teens excited about software freedom and help them learn skills they'll need as they become tomorrow's free software contributors and activists.

We'll be spreading the word about free software to young people, building supportive communities where teens can explore technology with others, helping young people defend their right to use free software and encouraging them to take their interests further in higher education.

So attended my first session at the 2024 Ditch summit, video discussion on Cautious Steps Toward AI Implementation in Education with Ken Shelton and Dee Lanier.

The videos of the sessions will be up until the 10th January

Excellent conversation and some really valid points raised about bias, and how we define for example cheating and ways we can address this by reframing how we do approach tasks, such as reframe cheating as potentially compromising learning.

Just making a post on this, as it may also be of interest to others looking at related careers. Sounds a good opportunity to get some great training in this field.

SMRs are defined as small nuclear reactors with a maximum output of 300 Megawatt electric (MWe) and can produce 7.2 million kWh per day. By comparison, large-size nuclear power plants have an output of over 1,000 MWe and can produce 24 million kWh per day. SMRs can vary in size from around 20 megawatts electric (MWe) up to 300 MWe and can use a range of possible coolants including light water, liquid metal or molten salt, depending on the technology.

So attended my first session at the 2024 Ditch summit, video discussion on How to ACE Student AI Literacy in Schools with Holly Clark.

The videos of the sessions will be up until the 10th January.

Once you register you have access to the pre recoded sessions, This session was a discussion between Matt Miller (host) and Holly Clark

Some excellent points raised, including how to critique information generated, ideas on how to differentiate if an image is AI generated, The signs an article may be AI generated. Being able to evaluate if an article is Ai generated is also important when undertaking research for essays or reading the news for example.

The above skills are taught by school anyway when it comes to research skills, so we are applying and adapting critical thinking skills to evaluating AI.

As this is evolving technology, it was also suggested the learning journey is shared by the teachers and students ( I would guess teaching assistants should really be part of this process too ). However, teachers need to understand AI so that they can provide students with a safe environment to explore AI, the possibilities and risks associated with AI.

I found the discussion very useful and will try and share some of my notes with teachers if I can.

This was fascinating and looked at how we can get students to ask questions and develop curiosity as part of their learning, and how this approach can be adapted across different age groups. The videos of the sessions will be up until the 10th January.

Once you register you have access to the pre recoded sessions, This session was a discussion between Matt Miller (host) and Trevor Mackenzie.

This format is great, as it seems to avoid many of the issues with live sessions which can be hampered with technical issues, that have a real knock effect post conferences if there is no access to the material presented.

With the recent riots in the UK, fuelled by misinformation. This link on a Fediverse caught my eye.

Critical thinking web have some learning modules which combine to make a course:-

• Basic logic
• Venn diagrams
• Sentential logic
• Predicate logic
• Scientific methodology
• Basic statistics
• Values
• Strategic reasoning
• Fallacies and biases
• Creativity

These courses and modules would be of interest to students but also anyone who wants to improve their own ability to think and understand the information we are presented (or perhaps bombarded with) on a daily basis, from a wide range of sources.

One of the advantages of being on the Fediverse is you interact with a really wide group of people. You also get to find out about interesting things going on. With Cybersecurity being a really hot topic at present with a real demand for skills, then Black Hat Spring Trainings 2024 | Registration may be of interest. This course will take place in the USA, but you only have until early January 2024 to sign up.
