Digital pH Tester

I recently ordered a digital pH meter to go with some of the Chemistry resources at the STEM event and at home.

This is a nice little unit, using 2x LR44 (AG13) cell batteries, I did a quick test on some tap water and some vinegar and got expected results. Seems tap water is slightly on the acidic side, so i may have to do proper experimentation with this.

Easy to set, just add batteries, take off protective cover and place in the liquid that you want to test.

One comment that the instructions are in Chinese, which isn't really helpful, but the unit is easy to use, with some common sense and problem-solving skills.

Measurements are from pH 0 to pH 14, with increments of 0.01 so it should be possible to measure very small changes or gradual changes that may take place during reactions for example.

I will be using this at a future STEM group meeting in the meantime, there is an experiment I want to undertake anyway and this will be ideal.

Nuclear weapons in space

Interesting article and video on what could happen if nuclear weapons were detonated in space.

Link to article and video here

What is interesting, and I did comment on this point is that if an EMP pulse takes out enemy facilities, they can also take out facilities by the country using that weapon too.

Video still makes some useful points.

Simple motor and fan

I have built this as part of a robot car project, However this set up works better as a stand-alone fan, than it does to drive a small wheeled vehicle forward. So sharing anyway.

Given the problems, give me a Chemistry set any day.

STEM Group 24th February 2024 Write Up

Today we had an update from Helen with her Advanced Lego car, this is going really well and can find objects and now turns to avoid them. It can also display information on orientation on a small LCD.

After giving the hot glue gun a quick clean and repair. This photo is posed as the glue gun is still plugged in.

We carried on with building the cars, we have been trying to build for the last few sessions. The main issue is lack of suitable resources and having to use bottle tops for wheels, kebab sticks for axels and then trying to fit it all together, when we also have either faulty or unsuitable switches, some don't work properly,, and along with motors have been soldered up too many times.

I also checked on my Copper Sulfate crystals I started last week, the liquid has now evaporated leaving some crystals in the dish, not ideal, but I need a much better way to do all this.
