RFID Magnetic stir bar

A Temperature-Sensing Magnetic Stir Bar

Magnetic stirrers are a standard feature in many science labs, they save manual stirring and also ensure that this is undertaken at a consistent speed.

This project from hackaday takes the tech one step further, by creating a custom stir bar, these hackers have added sensors, so data such as temperature can be monitored during experiments.

Sounds really cool, there is a video here explaining how everything works.

Internal Mars Structure

Just found this on the Fediverse.

This is interesting, esp as if there is Sulfur, I have asked on the Fediverse if this raises the potential for Nitrogen too.

New UN report highlights the scale of global climate change

Another article posted on Fediverse about the serious nature of climate change. As individuals there seems only a certain amount we can do, short of living off grid. So the question I asked on Science Forums [2] is “how many more reports are needed?”

In terms of recycling:

There seems to be a lot of initiatives out there but some local authorities in the UK seem unable to recycle some materials, I think the situation is improving.

There are some good ideas, such as turning face masks in to litter pickers [3] but this is in Cornwall, UK, I have not heard anything about this idea being rolled out nationally, but if it was, would that ideally need to be on a local level so the collection —> end product happens locally reducing the need for transporting materials and end products around?

MS Teams Privacy

I had to attend a meeting using teams earlier, it got cancelled, so despite just loading up the lobby room in the browser, it still leaves cookies behind. The concern is the size here.,

ms cookies

Cookies left behind by MS Teams

Contrast this to the small amount of data that big blue button needs for a session, much smaller.

faircam

Cookies left behind by Big Blue Button

I will leave this with people. In the meantime Big Blue Button is a viable, secure, safe, easy to use and privacy respecting, open source alternative.

On an end note it seems Edge also 'leaks' information on sites visited.

Paignton Library Code Club – Minetest

Some of the laptops at Code Club have had Minetest installed, this is the free software clone of Minecraft. As with Minecraft, Minetest has lots of mods etc available.

The diode.zone peertube instance has some reviews of these mods. Please see link below.

Can ActivityPub save the internet?

Interesting article on the verge looking at ActivityPub, the protocol that sits behind the fediverse.

I think the future is now with the decentralised social media networks, we have needed a different way of doing things for a while, so the above article is well worth checking out.

I have been on the fediverse for a good few years, started out with Diaspora, then moved to Friendica, then moved to Masdodon. These platforms work, and some are growing, or more to the point the fediverse is growing as a result of people getting to know about it.

I am also using WriteAs for this blog and Peertube to share videos, they are all part of the much wider fediverse.

There is an excellent info graphic at axbom.com showing the many branches of the Fediverse.

Feel free to join and be part of the future of social networking.

New code club browser editor – Testing

Code Club have created a new in browser code editor, which we can try and test at code club.

More information can be found here

While this is in testing, this is a really important part of the software development process, so being able to test software is just as important as writing software.
