FutureLearn course
I am just starting “Astronomy and Space Physics: Teaching Secondary Science”. This is to help me gain more familiarity on what is taught in secondary school science. Hopefully I can find employment to support the curriculum in some capacity.
It is important to be 'pro-active' in this, gain new skills and show you are willing to learn, develop and research content.
I feel that I have a lot to offer, so hopefully I will be able to make a positive contribution one day.

Freedom ladder – From the Free Software Foundation 2.0
Introduction
The “freedom ladder” is a new method the FSF campaigns team has developed to help users get their first start in software freedom.
One problem with most guides introducing newcomers to GNU/Linux is that they stop them too soon on their “journey to freedom,” and end up suggesting that a partially nonfree setup is a desirable outcome. By contrast, our guides focus is to encourage users to not rest content with nonfree software, while at the same time recognizing that they have other pressures and obligations. We want to help them stay both motivated and determined in their gradual process to eliminate nonfree software from their lives.
First meeting was excellent, really productive with lots of ideas being put forward
Second meeting is Thursday 22th July. 16:00 to 17:00 Eastern Time on IRC (chat) and will be looking at freedom replacements.
This is going to be 21:00 UK time I think.

Scismic Careers Fair
I attended the Scismic virtual careers fair yesterday (21st July). Excellent event and really useful. I am not looking for biotech jobs, but I did find the CV work shop useful, esp scanning through CVs to pick out key words / skills etc.
Looking forward to future events, workshops, webinars etc.

Open Insulin
If anyone tells you that there is nothing interesting on the Fediverse, then they probably have never used it. I found this earlier,
The Open Insulin Foundation is a non-profit creating the means for communities in-need to have local sources of safe, affordable, high-quality insulin.
I feel this project is well worth checking out and if possible supporting. Lets help more people world wide and reduce the medical divide that is clearly happening.

Debian 11
I decided to take the plunge and install Debian 11. This is currently in the very latter stages of testing.
Due to my system specification. I am running the XFCE4 desktop. Which is really nice and responsive. However I would run XFCE4 anyway.

I noticed that the system was rather sluggish. Looking around in the menu system I found Window Manager Tweaks under the settings menu. Using this I have turned off the compositor. This has really improved performance.

I only have Intel graphics, so this probably explain the performance issue.
