NASA Psyche Mission.

NASAs JSL next mission is to an interesting and perhaps unique Asteroid. Due to launch on October 12. The Psyche mission is a journey to a unique metal-rich asteroid orbiting the Sun between Mars and Jupiter.

Launch now scheduled for the 13th October

DART Plantary Defense Test

While NASA has been busy with the Artemis mission to the moon, which has been subject to technical setbacks, more recently a weather event. Nevertheless they are still busy.

Their latest mission (DART), has been a success. The idea behind this, is to crash a probe in to an asteroid, with the view to changing it's trajectory. This is useful as once we know that this is possible, we can protect the Earth from incoming asteroids or potentially other objects.

OSIRIS-REx mission

Yesterday, there was an update to the NASA OSIRIS-REx mission to collect and return a sample of dust from an asteroid.

This post was prompted by a BBC Science news report. The NASA mission page can also be found here.

Mission should return to earth in 2023.

Hopefully the sample collection went as planned.

Update 21/10/2020

Mission on the way back, sample collections went successfully, should return largest sample from a foreign body since Apollo.
