OS-Sci hackathon 2024

Groups of international students can participate one or both days. The event will be coordinated by OS-SCi in conjunction with foss partners and universities. During the event there will be live Masterclasses, which are streamed. Each day there's a prize of 2000 euros for the best team result.
You can register by pressing the Register button. Please fill in the name field, not only your name, but also the name of your team with postal code. Next we need your email adress.

Academics on Mastodon
Anyone now claiming that no one uses the Fediverse, clearly has no clue as to what they are talking about.
There is a large academic presence on Mastodon alone, and Mastodon is just part of the wider Fediverse. The first list below [1] is an excellent resource, there is also Trunk, which also lists by interest / topic.

Big Energy Saving Week

Energy Saving Week is celebrated from January 15 to 21. It’s tough to ignore the reality that energy prices are rising for the majority of United Kingdom citizens this year. Prices for most U.K. families are poised to climb significantly as part of the current gas price crisis, and with a change to the energy cap approaching this year. Energy Saving Week is a national initiative that aims to aid and encourage individuals to save energy while also lowering fuel expenses. The week focuses on educating the public on how to switch energy suppliers or tariffs to get the best price, get savings, and make houses more energy-efficient. Saving energy at home may lower both carbon emissions and energy expenses – urging people, schools, and organizations around the United Kingdom to help in making a difference.

C&C 3 game 1
I am going to use Vokoscreen-ng to make some videos of me playing Command and Conquer 3.
So far I have made a video that is in two parts. I did lose the skirmish but this was more of a test run to see how it would work.
Videos are hosted on Diode.zone which a Peertube instance.
As Peertube is federated, you can follow from other services such as Mastodon and comments should get federated.

New Superconductive Materials Have Just Been Discovered
Article in wired about new superconductive materials. This is interesting, even though the potential of these discoveries are still to be realised. At a basic level of understanding we have conductors and insulators, then we have materials such as semiconductors, then we find that under certain conditions the conductive properties can change further. So a excellent time to get in to science, but sometimes a person studying or working in a completely different area may see the potential in this.

Mastodon Announcement Jan 2025
There has been a major announcement by the main developer of Mastodon. In essence, the founder, Eugen Rochko has made the decision that he should not be making all the decisions and has transferred key assets to a non-profit entity. You can read more below.
This is an excellent move, as Eugen does not want to be the next Elon Musk or Mark Zuckerberg.
