With lots of discussions about big tech, privacy and data protection there has been discussions on the Social Web, about using protocols such as Gopher and related software.

We are also seeing attacks on science from the USA with departments cut, and information on a range of issues; such as DEI, Climate Science, Medical Science being removed, risking this being lost forever.

The Gopher protocol (/ˈɡoʊfər/ ⓘ) is a communication protocol designed for distributing, searching, and retrieving documents in Internet Protocol networks. [1]

There are still some servers out there, some are new, and offer services such as HackerNews, Project Gutenberg and others. Thanks to Anthk @anthk@paquita.masto.host who has made a list of some of these Gopher servers

Note the tutorial above on how to set up gopher on a Raspberry Pi, appears to be using system V, (init.d system I think) hence I have included the 3rd link which covers how to manage services on both. The 2nd link should help with setting up the actual gopher files.

I tried to install the software mentioned in the first link above and there seems to be a problem with this in my raspberry pi, so I removed this and have installed gophernicus instead.

If all else fails then vern.cc members get gopher as one of the services. So I will look at a hosted service.

ME: Candidate accepted another offer.
CLIENT: I thought she really liked our company.
ME: Yes, she did
CLIENT: I don’t understand why she would throw away a great future here.
ME: She is very talented. She will have a great future wherever she chooses.
CLIENT: But we’re #1 in our space!

Companies need to realize interviews are two-way streets. You are not only choosing the candidate, the candidate is choosing you as well. While you are taking 3+ months to hire someone (looking for perfection) putting candidates through multiple interviews and tests - another company recognized her worth and made her an offer far above the market range. If you want the best talent improve your hiring processes. Candidates have negotiating power too.

Personal experience seems to point to employers delaying getting back and delaying moving what should be a fairly simple process forward. This leaves people not knowing what is going on, sometimes for weeks at a time.

Employees who are keen to make a start will say so, we appreciate that there are processes. This is about the endless waiting and waiting for people to get back and keep us updated.

This weeks short course is Spot and Support Speech, Language & Communication Needs.

This is a course for anyone new to Speech, Language and Communication Needs and wanting to find out more about them. It aims to give you the basics so that you can start to identify pupils who may be displaying tendencies and work with those pupils to support their needs. We’ll therefore give you advice and simple ideas you can put into practice straight away and approaches to adapt and trial. It may be that the pupil needs further support so we’ll talk about what other avenues you may want to pursue. Great for teachers new to the profession, support staff or anyone wanting to check their understanding and support pupils to have the best possible outcomes.

Matrix is a communication protocol. You can read a more detailed description here and I have found a video which an introduction below.

The Devon and Cornwall linux user group now have their IRC channel bridged to Matrix, this means that the channel #dcglug can be accessed by anyone who has either an IRC client, Matrix Client or connects to IRC via the web interface for example. This opens up the chat to far more people, which is a good thing.
