E-Safety

This is a quick post to remind everyone to stay safe while online and communicating on forums or e-communities.

Keeping safe applies to everyone, however the following below is aimed at anyone under 18.

As most people are probably not at school due to the Covid19 lock down, you should be able to contact your school for help on e-safety issues. You can also ask a parent / guardian for advice.

You should ASK permission before signing up to the website(s) mentioned in these posts. You may need a parent to sign up, if you're under 13 for example. They should help keep you safe by following the guidelines and advice. Talk about any concerns or worries.

Know how to use the forums and who to report problems to, this could include technical issues.

Xubuntu Development

Xubuntu [1] is a GNU / Linux based operating system that is built on the same software base as the popular Ubuntu Operating system. As with all free software projects it is maintained by teams of developers from all over the world, different background, experience levels.

With the Covid19 pandemic re-writing how we live, perhaps now is the time to get involved.

The main areas we would like help with include:-

  • Artwork
  • Development, including programming and packaging
  • Documentation and Translation
  • Marketing and Website
  • Quality Assurance, including testing and bug triaging

All of these areas are vitally important, as it helps the developers identify problems and fix them. The more people who get involved with just testing and providing feedback, increases the hardware variety the system has been tested on.

To get involved please visit the developer area of the website [2] or join the e-mail discussion list [3].

The team(s) are currently developing documentation for Xubuntu so if you're interested please get in touch via [3].

Don't worry if you lack experience with this, the team can help, plus this is a great way to develop experience and learn. The team is using GoogleDocs to for development.

Legionella Risks

Further to my previous post on Legionnaires Disease [1] (11/5/2020). The advice from the HSE [2] can be found here

Not many people seem to be discussing this at the moment. There is a really good discussion on this on LinkedIn with Simon French [3] (Managing Director at Water Hygiene Training Ltd & Coronasafe Ltd). But this has to be a topic of discussion as United Kingdom starts to reopen.

iceburg

I agree the points being raised here, people never seem to see what is going on under the surface.

Online and remote learning : Lets not forget privacy.

This is an excellent article by the Free software foundation on the importance of maintaing user / learner privacy while they are learning online.

Some interesting points being raised and some serious concerns about privacy, use of webcams and monitoring of students during tests etc.

Learners need to ask questions and not just accept this as the new normal.

Action Counters Terrorism update.

Back in December 2019 I completed the Action Counters Terrorism course.

ACT Awareness e-learning is a new counter-terrorism (CT) CT awareness product designed for all UK based organisations and individuals. It provides nationally accredited, corporate CT guidance to help industry better understand and mitigate against current terrorist methodology.

The following e-learning modules are available:

Introduction to Terrorism Identifying Security Vulnerabilities How to Identify and Respond to Suspicious Behaviour How to Identify and Deal with a Suspicious Item What to do in the Event of a Bomb Threat How to Respond to a Firearms or Weapons Attack Summary and Supporting Materials

As of 22/5/2020 I have completed the updated version of this which adds SCaN which stands for See, Check and Notify. It is still useful to
