This years Free Software Foundation conference is back in Boston as an in person conference, however talks will still be streamed online. It will run from March 18th to 19th, 2023.

LibrePlanet 2023

This years theme is Charting the course.

I have been helping with reviewing talks for the conference, so from this I know there is a really good range of interesting talks, workshops for the event.

Home Chemistry 1 – Results

Results

An hour in to the experiment :– so 15:15 on 03/1/2023

Copper foil and zinc have produced little in the way of reaction. The Magnesium on the other hand has fully reacted with the Vinegar.

Conclusion

Other than stating the obvious, the Magnesium is clearly the more reactive with vinegar. But then Magnesium is a group 2 element, where as the others are Transition, so the properties are different anyway.

Home Chemistry 1

A few days ago I was having a look what would happen if various metallic elements were added to a beaker of Distilled White vinegar.

Using Zinc (Zn) didn't appear to do very much, however dropping Magnesium (Mg), did appear to produce a slow reaction, which seemed to result in the magnesium dissolving.

So the experiment I am going to carry out will use the following:

Equipment

  • Test Tube Rack
  • 3 Test tubes

White Vinegar

Elements

  • Zinc Granuals (Zn)
  • Copper Foil (Cu)
  • Magnesium Ribbon (Mg)
  • Distilled White Vinegar

White Vinegar

Other

  • Universal indicator paper

This is not strictly needed, but will be used to test the pH of the vinegar before I start.

Method

  1. Part fill each test tube with White Vinegar
  2. Place 1 sample of each element in a test tube.
    • Note Copper foil and magnesium ribbon should be cut to size.
  3. Place out of the way for a period of time and monitor results

Notes

Experiment started 14:13 on 03/01/2023

Bresser Microscope

I received a Bresser usb Microscope for christmas. This is a nice, compact unit capable of 50x to 1000x magnification.

Microscope USB Microscope :

The supplied software is Windows & Mac (or this can be downloaded). As I am running Debian 11.x I used Cheese which is camera software. The software works fine. As seen in the photo below.

Share to Mastodon – Firefox plugin

There is now a new plug in for Mozilla Firefox which facilitates the sharing of articles to the Federated social media network Mastodon, part of the Fediverse.

This is a really good step forward, and will really help.

Clearly in the Uk we have a different system, however a good point is made about learning CPR and simple life saving, it can make all the difference until help arrives.

I found details of some coding are detailed in a previous post.

  • Activities are being planned, and may change depending on who attends.

We can probably do more with the Raspberry Pi & Micro:bits.
