Paying for a full tank in advance can be used as a way to avoid refueling fees and save time when returning. However, this option has its own financial nuances.
How it works When signing a lease agreement, you will be offered one of two options:
Pre-purchase Fuel: You pay for a full tank of fuel at the rental company's fixed price when you pick up your motorhome camper. In this case, you can return the car with any amount of gasoline – there will be no fines, and the company will take care of refueling before the next delivery. Return Full: Standard pattern. You take a full tank and are responsible for returning it full yourself. If the tank is not full, the company will write off the cost of the missing fuel at an inflated price plus a service fee.
When to choose pre-purchase This option is beneficial in the following cases:
Short trip (up to 3-4 days): Most likely, you will not have time to use all the gas purchased and will return the motorhome with almost a full tank. In fact, you'll get free gas for the next tenant. Early flight or rush: You won't have to look for a gas station on the way to the airport and stand in line, risking missing your flight or getting a fine for not having enough tank. Lack of familiar gas station brands: If you are not sure that you will quickly find a convenient gas station of the desired type (for example, diesel), it is easier to pay for everything at once.
When is it more profitable to refuel yourself (Return Full) This option is preferable for long trips:
Long routes (a week or more): A week of driving through national parks will burn through most of your tank. All you have to do is add a little fuel at the pump closest to the return office at the regular market price. If there is a cheap gas station near the rental point: You can refuel at the lowest price just before entering the rental car parking lot.
Important nuance As a rule, money for unused fuel under the Pre-purchase option is not refunded. Therefore, if you plan to drive a long distance and know for sure that the tank will be almost empty, always choose the standard “return full” rule and refuel yourself 5-10 minutes before arriving at the office.
