I think this Daily Mail article demonstrates how poor journalism is getting in 2025. This is their article on the Planet K2-18b.

While the JWST has found some indications that life may exist on the planet, due to the Hydrogen Atmosphere and also the discovery of

• Di Methyl Sulfide
• Dimethyl Disulfide

The WikiPedia article tells a much different story.

Even the first part of this quote is helpful in that it says the press release was irresponsible. And that the data collected so far is not enough to confirm any life.

Astrophysicist and science writer Ethan Siegel denounced the press release as "wildly irresponsible" and astronomer Ryan MacDonald pointed out that the team's analysis was flawed because it only compared a select few chemicals to the data.[5] According to MacDonald, a proper statistical analysis of DMS and DMDS in K2-18b's spectrum would instead give a false positive probability of about 28%, corresponding to a 1σ confidence for the these two chemicals.[5] A 1σ significance does not qualify as a meaningful detection.[5]

The fact that the DM article also somehow has a section where someone has used AI to extrapolate what life may look like is rather ridiculous, as is the fact that according to that, the frog has 3 eyes and looks as it does to allow for the lower light level on the planet, this is odd given the fact the Wikipedia article suggests the light level on K2-18b may be the same or similar as it is on Earth, due to the distance from its star and the size of the star as well as other factors.

I think whoever thinks using AI to extrapolate what alien life may look like is risking their entire science career and credibility and this person was apparently from Cambridge University, so the reputation of Cambridge university is also going to be questioned.

I am baffled as to how much of this gets passed editorial in mainstream press.

In the meantime, if you really want to learn more, I strongly suggest you read actual science papers.

Granted, I think arXiv is pre-prints, but at least these papers are written by people who have a clue as to what they are talking about. It is also essential to be able to dig deeper and do your own research so when asking questions you can refer to decent sources of information.

I think it is also important to remember this planet is >120 light years away, so the information being picked up took >120 years to reach the JWST, therefore we are looking back in time. So it is important to understand that what is there right now in 2025 may be different to what may or may not have been there in 1905 when that light started its journey. Or at least this is how I understand things

If you want to read and have a good laugh, then read the Daily mail and other mainstream media.

If you enjoy the LibreLounge podcast [2], Christopher Lemmer Webber [6] appears to have left this, and started up a new podcast called FOSS AND Crafts [3]. This is a “A podcast about free software, free culture, and making things together”

This is something that is worth checking out, as with LibreLounge you can subscribe to the podcast and also download on .ogg [5] and .mp3 file formats.

I wrote a post in December on how to subscribe to LibreLounge using vlc [7] so the procedure is the same.

In today's video, I do a quick run through on how to subscribe to the Librelouge podcast using the vlc media player.

I am already subscribed to this, so before I paste the link in I remove the existing entry. But this also illustrates that it is just as easy to remove subscriptions.

Libre Lounge is another podcast that has covered different aspects of the Fediverse, this includes some of the more technical aspects including a multipart discussion on Activity Pub.   Activity pub is one of the protocols that allows posts to be federated across the network.

If you create lots of media such as photos or graphics. You may want to add information pertaining to the copyright (or ideally copyleft) of the image.

As I am interested in Creative Commons (CC) then it makes sense to be able to add one of the many creative commons license logos to an image.

I asked on Friendica about how to do this (having tried and failed before) and was provided with some help and a really useful shell script to automate the process.

Firstly we need an image to modify and a logo image to add to this:

For the sake of this article, I am just using a random photo I took of Paignton Geopark. I have also reduced the image size to 640×480 to make it smaller for the website as per command below.

gm mogrify -resize 640×480 *.JPG

I also had to convert the jpg files to png files with the following

gm convert DSCF0182mod.jpg DSCF0182mod.png

So that this blog would display the images.

The next step is to create a folder structure to contain what we need to undertake the work.

What we need is a new folder

mkdir insertcc-logo

Inside this, we need another folder called out

cd insertcc-logo

mkdir out

we need some more files mostly the cc logos, these are available from a simple duckduckgo search.

Note if putting on a website or other media you need to properly include the creative commons license being used on here I have put

Which should then link to the human readable license terms you want to use.

So what we should have is

\insertcc-logo\insertcc.sh

\insertcc-logo\out

\insertcc-logo\out\88×31.png

\insertcc-logo\out\cc-zero.png

etc

Put the SOURCE FILE in \insertcc-logo

MODIFY AND RUN the script below

Our script looks like ( save this as insertcc.sh or what you want to call this )

for p in *.JPG; do convert “$p” ./out/88×31.png -gravity southeast -geometry +10+10 -composite “out/$p”; done

What the script does is take each file with the JPG extension (or other extension), add the required logo, and save the modified file in

\insertcc-logo\out

As per :

You need to make sure that the script points to the correct source files.

You also need to point the script to the correct file you want to insert in to your source image.

for p in *.JPG;

To use a different logo change this section of the script

$p” ./out/88×31.png
