The next meeting of the Tor bay Tinkerers group will be on Saturday 26th July 2025 from 9:30am

We meet at:-

STEAM Café & Discovery Centre 13 Torbay Road, Paignton.

Last meeting we spent some time looking at the Lego Robots, which are located in what was the Hyperspace Café in Victoria Square. (2 mins walk from the STEAM Café). By the time of this meeting they should be good to go with the space set up for the planned events, or at least early stages of that.

So time will probably be split between STEAM and the other venue. You will need to ASK at the counter, as we will let staff know we intend to go.

We meet at:-

STEAM Café & Discovery Centre 13 Torbay Road, Paignton.

We usually start off in the café, then move in to the back room, where the discovery centre is. However, we may also visit the Tea Shed which is in the Hyperspace café, this is located a short distance away in Victoria Square.

We will let the staff at the café know where we are, please ask.

Today was really productive

It was Myself, Helen and Ben. Ben gave an overview of his CNC project, and brought along the Arduino control unit and display unit. We had a discussion around this and other topics such as Containers, Kubernetes, git and how we can manage projects using git and gitlab, github.

The quality of these is not very good due to lighting, but the first photo shows the control board, the 2nd shows the display from the front.

Helen gave a review of what happened when she visited the UK Micromouse and Robotics Society contest in Stratford, and that she will be attending the next meeting in a few weeks, this led to a discussion on hosting a similar event in Torbay.

Helen has also taken the Obstacle avoiding robot, to change the motor as the one current installed in faulty, I had a space so that was taken too. Fingers crossed that next meeting it will behave a little better.

Meeting held at STEAM Cafe & Discovery Centre 13 Torbay Road, Paignton.

It was just myself and Helen again this month, but we were busy testing Helen's Robot Drag car, this can now go the distance in <2 seconds, which is the target time. It does seem to spin after slowing down.

The Obstacle avoiding (OA) robot now works, and now has two programs attached to it, one is the OA mode, and the other it is programmed to moved around as if dancing.

The code is now on my laptop, so can be uploaded as needed, depending on what is required.

We also had a look at the Micro:bit car that belongs to Lucy M, this again works, beeps, the LEDs are a little bright, which is great in the dark.

I also had a look at the Snap Electronics kit and built up a few basic circuits including a transistor Amp.

A basic LED with switch

Transistor (NPN) amplifier with LED off

Transistor (NPN) amplifier with instructions.

The STEAM discovery centre also has a nice train set. This is Thomas the tank engine themed, but has track, points to change tracks and carriages for the trains.
