Space

What is Space-Time?

So back to some Physics videos, what is space-time?: This video does a really nice job of explaining this in a way that is understandable, but not so simple it loses any meaning.

I have included links to wondorium below, as well as links to the usual discussion forums.

Baryon Acoustic Oscillations

This was posted to the Fediverse earlier today, YouTube video to explain how acoustics are helping unlock more cosmological secrets.

This animation shows how baryon acoustic oscillations act as a cosmic ruler for measuring dark energy.

CanSat Contest

The UK CanSat Competition 2023/24 is open for registration. Don’t miss out on your chance to enter, the deadline is the 17th of October 2023.

CanSat provides students with the opportunity to have practical experience working on a small-scale space project. Students (14+) can enter the CanSat competition and design their own satellite simulation in a soft drink can.

Astro Pi 2023

Astro Pi 2023 Challenge coming soon.

What is Astro Pi?

The European Astro Pi Challenge offers young people the amazing opportunity to conduct scientific investigations in space by writing computer programs that run on Raspberry Pi computers aboard the International Space Station (ISS).

2023 challenge opens mid September.

Please see website for details.

Note: As I run the STEM group, and we are a bring you own projects event, then I am happy for this to be a safe place to meet up and work on projects. However:-

  • If you are working on Mission Zero you will need a PARENT / GUARDIAN to help you.
  • If you are undertaking Mission Space Lab you will need a MENTOR to help you.

Paignton Library STEM Group – October 2022

The October STEM group meeting will be taking place on Saturday 8/10/2022.

Harding is looking at doing a talk / discussion on

  • Historical units, and dimensions in equations.
  • For engineering equations I offer two examples:-
    • The bending of beams
    • Aerodynamic lift from a wing.
  • Well will also have Prospects from Brixham joining us Prospects have interest in “data, data analytics, data science, perhaps making things with sensors and Raspberry Pis”
  • This event also falls during World Space Week

Paignton Library STEM Group – September 2022

The September STEM group meeting will be taking place on Saturday 10/9/2022.

No Harding or Lucy this month,

However we can perhaps discuss the NASA Artemis mission and e-safety. We will have copies of Vodafone Digital Parenting to give away, but this will hopefully be part of a wider discussion on e-safety.

Paignton Library STEM Group – August 2022 Writeup

The August STEM group meeting took place on Saturday 13/8/2022. It was a quiet meeting but fairly productive.

I partly set up a monitor / keyboard and mouse as I was expecting 2 attendees to come along for help with a Raspberry Pi. They didn't make it so, we just carried on with the other planned activities.

We watched the August Space Telescope Science Institute public lecture ( recording ) and had an interesting discussion around this, which also led to a discussion on photography and infra red and UV filtering. Harding also offered a talk on Space and time, which we will discuss further and agree for a later date.

Prior to the meeting starting, and with help from Loic at the library, we set up a tablet with the Lego WeDo 2.0 and got this working. So this is another activity for both Code Club and a future STEM Group meeting.

The next two Code Club will take place on the 20th August and 3rd September, while the next STEM group meeting will be on 10th September. So hopefully more of the same.

Astro Pi & Moonhack

AstroPi

Giving young people the chance to run their computer programs in space

Another opportunity for people to write some code that will be run on the International Space station. Again something that can be undertaken at Code Club or STEM Group

Moonhack

Moonhack is a free international event bringing kids from across the world together for a week of coding!

Suitable for kids ages 8-15, it’s a free, easy and hands-on way to get coding, no matter where you are.

Over the past 6 years, more than 150,000 kids have coded as part of Moonhack.

Moonhack will take place during world space week in 4th to 10th October 2022.
