Major update announcement

We have decided to extend the STEM group to two Saturdays a month, so we will now meet on the 2nd Saturday as usual but also the 4th Saturday. The hours will now be 10:30 to 15:00.

We have room 12 available and will have some tables available for people to use. We want to keep this as one person (or small group) to one table. This gives people space to work on their projects.

A note on code club

Code club itself follows a specific set of activities, we had moved on significantly from this.

Code Club has therefore been shutdown. The IT learning centre will still be available to anyone wanting to carry on with what we were doing at code club. However, this will ONLY happen IF there is a library volunteer in the room.

There is no reason why code club can't restart once the computer room has been upgraded. For this to happen, we need two volunteers (who will need to apply to volunteer and undergo DBS and other background checks). Perhaps evenings after school.

We also need children and young people who are interested to sign up. As of Feb 2024. We can only really offer

  • Scratch
  • Python
  • HTML / CSS
  • Micro:bit

Based activities.

Mag Pi Books

The Mag Pi, publishes a monthly Raspberry Pi magazine and has also published several books that are also available as free downloads. These are excellent resources and can be downloaded from the Link below.

We have some of these available at Code Club and Stem group.

Resistor boards

This is a repost and update for a previous post.

The Paignton Library STEM Group

As the next Paignton Library Stem Group meeting is

Date : Saturday 9th April 2022 Times : 11am –> 15:00

In preparation for the next event, I have been working on creating some electronics resources to demonstrate at the event.

These are quite simple to make, solder on headers and which ever component is needed for that particular board

Electronics 1

Various resistors 270ohm 330ohm 1k ohm 10k ohm

As of 23/3/2022 I have made up the following:-

  • 20K
  • 1 M
  • 2,2K
  • 15K
  • 80k

Which I hope to use for demonstrating voltage dividers.

A few pictures of some previous boards, that I have built up.

Electronics 1

Power supply, we need to get power from a battery to the circuit.

Electronics 1

Reed switch (not soldered), 1uF capacitors (soldered) and a switch block, not soldered as I want to figure out which switch block to use (I have a few)

Electronics 1

I have added a 3 way header as this allows for:

  • Components to be attached together
  • Branches in circuits
  • Connection of meters, scopes and other equipment

It should be possible to build a circuit that, internally will flash, for example an LED then use a scope to examine the frequencies at different points in the circuit.

I plan to solder up other component boards. Hopefully I will have something to demonstrate, but other visitors should be able to have a go.
