Lego Locks

This is cool and interesting, making locks from Lego. Great way to learn about the engineering principles behind locks and keys. I found a link to this on Fediverse (Mastodon) earlier, so am sharing.

Crest Awards

As we are about trying to promote STEM and related subjects. I am just posting a link to Crest Awards. The event could potentially be a safe place for teams to meet up and collaborate and work on projects relating to this. We have the space and some resources for this.

If anyone is taking part in this, let's perhaps see if and how we can help.

STEM Group – Mar 9 2024 – write up

We had a fairly busy session today., We had an update from Helen on the advanced Lego robot, this can now find its way around the room better and has better turning control.

We did some more on the robot building, tried to flash a Nintendo DS with new firmware, I am not sure if this worked properly.

Furthermore, we also had Rob, who brought along his MacBook running Ubuntu, and we tried, downloading Raspbian, but there were a few issues with this and writing to an SD card. This can be fixed for the next meeting.

We also had a good discussion about projects Rob is working on, had a look at some of his previous work (well photos of).

We also got the PC that one of the attendees is working on, so this now needs an OS and some other work, then we should have a complete system. I will add the software needed to the Ventoy disk before the next meeting.

So in all, an interesting and productive meeting, we are slowly building up a good group of people.

Lego WeDo

At the next STEM group meeting on the 9th March, we should be able to have a go at some of the Lego WeDo.

Robot car 2

Another idea for making a simple car

I may have a go at this too, see which idea works best.

STEM Group 24th February 2024 Write Up

Today we had an update from Helen with her Advanced Lego car, this is going really well and can find objects and now turns to avoid them. It can also display information on orientation on a small LCD.

feb 24th

After giving the hot glue gun a quick clean and repair. This photo is posed as the glue gun is still plugged in.

feb 24th

We carried on with building the cars, we have been trying to build for the last few sessions. The main issue is lack of suitable resources and having to use bottle tops for wheels, kebab sticks for axels and then trying to fit it all together, when we also have either faulty or unsuitable switches, some don't work properly,, and along with motors have been soldered up too many times.

feb 24th

I also checked on my Copper Sulfate crystals I started last week, the liquid has now evaporated leaving some crystals in the dish, not ideal, but I need a much better way to do all this.

STEM Group 24th February 2024

The next Stem group event will take place on :

Date: Saturday Feb 24th 2024 Time: 10:30am to 15:00 Location: Paignton Library and Information Centre Room: 12

Please remember you need to bring your OWN resources such as wire, solder, glue sticks, components etc.

We can carry on with :-

  • Robot car projects
  • Have a look at the results of dropping a gummy sweet in to Vinegar
  • Hopefully have a look at some Copper Sulfate crystals, I set this up on 17/2/2024
  • What ever else people bring along to the event.
  • Coding activities can still take place in the IT learning centre

Stem group experiment – follow up 1

17/2/2024

So today I was at the library to sort out a few things in prep for next week. I took some fresh red cabbage indicator in and tested the liquid from yesterday

Gummy sweet 2

The red colour of the indicator suggests that the solution is still acidic.

Stem group experiment

At the last STEM group meeting on 10/2/2024. I dropped a gummy sweet in to a beaker of White Vinegar. Nothing happened at first, so I just left this in the cupboard.

Dropping in today to pick some resources up, I checked and the sweet had dissolved.

Gummy sweet1

The yellow colour reflects the colour of the sweet dropped in.

At the next meeting on the 24th, I will look at this more and see if the pH of the liquid is different.
